Montessori in the Summertime

Summer is a time of adventure and exploration, especially for children! The weather allows for so many learning opportunities that can be incorporated into any summer day. The next time you find yourself in the great outdoors, consider trying out some of these simple, Montessori-based activities with your kids!

1. Cloud Watching with a Purpose

The next time you find yourself outside, make it a learning moment! Watch this handy guide to cloud watching with your kids, and then find a comfy spot in the grass and see the different kinds of clouds you can spot!

2. Plant a Garden

Speaking of free, the Children’s MuseumMuseum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Natural Science, the Health Museum, and others are open for absolutely no admission fee every Thursday! These museums are in close proximity, so make a day of it, and bring along a picnic to enjoy in Hermann Park.

3. Eat a Picnic

It doesn’t have to be an elaborate affair…simply make a point of eating outdoors. Allow your children to take part in preparing their food and carrying it outside. By allowing your child to take part in the preparations, they are able to learn important life skills that they will use for the rest of their lives!

4. Go Stargazing

Let your children stay up a little later, and take some time to look at the stars! During the day, go over some of the constellations with this guide, and as nightfall approaches, let your children help prepare for the outing by gathering blankets, flashlights, snacks, and a constellation map. While you’re waiting for nightfall, share some of the stories behind the constellations with your kids!

It doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming to enjoy Montessori-based activities with your kids. The most important thing is to remember to follow your child’s lead! A child’s imagination is a powerful tool.

Encourage your child to become a self-inspired learner by being open to suggestions and ideas!

Montessori School of Downtown

It all began over 30 years ago with two newlyweds who were passionate about education. Together, Ms. Rita, a renowned professional educator, and Mr. Hersh, a natural teacher and entrepreneur, created a child care education program that focused on the concept of self-inspired learning.
